About Cooke Rentals in Mt. Airy NC & King NC
Cooke Rentals began at the foot of the hill on West Lebanon Street in 1973. What started as a typical gas station and small engine repair shop known as Cooke Sales & Service evolved into the present day Cooke Rentals. The early rental "fleet" consisted of one electric jackhammer followed by a gas-powered chainsaw or two. The owner, Byron Cooke, along with his wife Linda, has poured countless hours nurturing the business into what it is today.
The company lost its lease at the Lebanon Street location in 1976, but Byron stumbled upon a closed down hosiery mill on Willow Street, which he purchased at auction. This was to be the new home for Cooke Rentals for the next eleven years. The old Cox Coal Yard building across the street had suffered from severe fire damage but Byron and Linda had the vision to rebuild this structure into a new "more polished" location for the rental company. They added on to the building for additional storage shortly after opening. This building witnessed the most growth the company had ever seen.
In 1992, a branch location was opened in the small town of Denver, NC near Lake Norman. The store was an instant success. The rapid growth of both stores led to new locatins for each. Operations in Mt. Airy were moved into the former Burton Dodge dealership, just a couple hundred feet from the original Lebanon Street locale. The Denver branch relocated into a brand new facility in 1995 and underwent an expansion in 1998 that doubled its size.
A third location was opened in August of 1999 in Cornelius, NC, just north of Charlotte. Six years later the store was moved across the street to a much larger facility. Byron and Linda's sons manage each of the three locations. Ben Cooke is at the Mt. Airy store, Chad Cooke is in Denver, and Andy Cooke at Cornelius.
Cooke Rentals now boasts a multi-million dollar rental inventory consisting of tools and equipment for do-it-yourselfers, general contractors, and even party and event planners. The diverse supply of equipment includes generators, forklifts, backhoes, air compressors, trenchers, and man lifts reaching up to sixty-six feet, along with much more. The event equipment consists of inflatable rides, tables, chairs, wedding candelabras, serving items, and tents over a hundred feet in length.
